There’s something rather comforting about river cruising. You unpack once, settle into your cabin, and then let the scenery come to you.

This seven-night journey along the beautiful Danube feels particularly lovely for anyone who likes the idea of travelling solo, but would rather have plenty of reassurance and friendly company around them too.

Created especially for solo travellers, it combines beautiful European cities, gentle sightseeing and relaxing time on board a five-star river ship — with the freedom to join in as much or as little as you please.

Why this feels like a Gentle Escape

I particularly like this sailing for someone taking their first solo holiday, or perhaps their first trip after a little while away from travelling.

You’ll be amongst other solo travellers from the beginning, so there’s no feeling of being the odd one out. A welcome dinner and drink gives everyone an easy opportunity to get to know one another, and an experienced Tour Manager is there throughout the journey.

There’s structure when you want it, company when you’d like it, and plenty of time when you can simply enjoy being somewhere lovely.

And because this is a river cruise, there’s no need to keep packing and moving hotels. Your comfortable cabin becomes your little home for the week while the Danube carries you from one beautiful place to the next.

What your days might feel like

Mornings might begin with breakfast on board as the river slips quietly past, before heading ashore for a guided walk or visit.

Some days bring grand cities such as Vienna and Budapest, while others feel softer and slower, with pretty riverside towns, abbeys and time to simply enjoy the scenery.

There’s a lovely balance between included sightseeing and time at leisure, so you can join in, wander at your own pace, or return to the ship for a quiet afternoon if that feels more comfortable.

Evenings are easy too, with dinner already taken care of and the chance to enjoy a drink, a little entertainment or simply some peaceful time on board.

Some highlights along the way include:

Your journey begins in Budapest, before cruising north towards Esztergom, once Hungary’s capital. Here you can explore its magnificent Basilica and historic centre before returning to the ship for a relaxed afternoon sailing.

In Bratislava, there’s time to discover the pretty old town and its hilltop castle, followed by another leisurely stretch of cruising as you continue into Austria.

You’ll visit picturesque Dürnstein, with its blue church tower and beautiful riverside setting, before seeing the remarkable Melk Abbey.

Later in the week, you can choose between spending time in the charming Austrian city of Linz or taking the scenic journey to Salzburg for a guided walking tour and time to wander at your own pace.

Then comes elegant Vienna, filled with grand architecture, cafés and classical music. A live classical quartet recital adds a quietly special touch to your visit.

Finally, you’ll cruise back towards Budapest, enjoying a guided introduction to the city and views across the Danube to its magnificent Parliament building.

Your last evening includes a Hungarian folklore show on board — a lovely way to round off the week.

Where you’ll be staying

You’ll spend seven nights aboard a five-star river ship, with full-board dining included.

Meals are taken on board, which can be especially reassuring when travelling solo. There’s no need to search for somewhere to eat alone each evening, and everyone on this particular departure is travelling solo too.

There’s also a complimentary all-inclusive drinks package, along with tea and coffee on board and free Wi-Fi.

Once you’ve settled in, everything begins to feel wonderfully straightforward.

A few reassuring details

There are nine included experiences, so you can see plenty without having to organise everything yourself.

Guided visits are built into the journey, while some days offer flexible choices too. You don’t need to feel that you must see or do everything — enjoying the ship, watching the riverbanks drift past or finding a quiet corner with a cup of tea is just as much a part of the holiday.

Your Tour Manager has been specially selected for their ability to look after and connect with solo travellers, so there’s always someone familiar around if you have a question or simply want a little reassurance.

Your cruise also includes:

  • Seven nights aboard a five-star river ship

  • Full-board dining

  • Complimentary all-inclusive drinks package

  • Nine included experiences

  • Welcome dinner and drink

  • Dedicated Tour Manager throughout

  • Complimentary tea and coffee on board

  • Free Wi-Fi

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been thinking about travelling on your own but aren’t quite ready for something that feels too independent, I think this could be a really lovely first step.

You can arrive knowing that everyone else is travelling solo too, settle into the same comfortable ship for the whole week, and wake each day somewhere new without having to manage the logistics yourself.

Beautiful places, friendly company and plenty of moments simply watching the Danube drift by. You don’t have to be bold to travel. You can go gently — and still go beautifully.
